Does Cigna Cover Drug and Alcohol Detox?

Yes. Cigna plans cover medically necessary treatment for substance use disorders, including medically supervised detox, residential treatment, medication-assisted treatment, and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. Under the Affordable Care Act and the federal parity law, these benefits must be comparable to coverage for other medical care. Cigna’s behavioral health benefits are administered through Evernorth, so that name may appear on your authorization paperwork.

Your Cigna Plan Type and What It Means for Detox

Cigna offers several plan types, and the type you have affects both your costs and whether you can use a provider outside your home state.

PPO and Open Access Plus (OAP) plans do not require referrals and allow out-of-network care at a higher cost share. These are the most common employer plans and the most flexible for treatment away from home.

EPO plans do not require referrals but cover in-network providers only, except in emergencies. Confirming that your detox center is in network is essential.

HMO plans require a primary care physician and referrals for specialty care, and generally limit non-emergency care to in-network providers in your service area.

Whatever your plan type, it has a deductible, a copay or coinsurance, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Once you reach the maximum, covered services are paid in full for the rest of the plan year.

Out-of-network care typically comes with a higher deductible and coinsurance, possible balance billing, and on EPO and HMO plans, no coverage at all outside emergencies. In some situations where an appropriate in-network facility is not available, an insurer may agree to a single case agreement that treats an out-of-network provider as in network for one admission. Our admissions team can tell you whether that applies to your situation.

Medical Necessity and Pre-Authorization

Before approving inpatient detox, Cigna confirms that the level of care is medically necessary. Like most insurers, Cigna uses the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria, which look at six areas:

1. Intoxication and withdrawal potential. How severe and how dangerous is withdrawal likely to be?
2. Medical conditions. Are there health issues that could complicate withdrawal?
3. Emotional, behavioral, and cognitive conditions. Are there co-occurring mental health concerns?
4. Readiness to change. Where are you in terms of motivation for treatment?
5. Relapse and continued use potential. What has happened in past attempts to stop?
6. Recovery environment. Is home a safe place to recover, or is a residential setting needed?

Our clinical team completes this assessment and our admissions team submits it to Cigna for authorization. You do not have to manage any of it. Once approved, Cigna issues an authorization and reviews continued stays based on medical necessity.

How to Verify Your Cigna Coverage

Option 1: Check for yourself. Log in to myCigna and look under your benefits for behavioral health or substance use treatment. Note your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. You can also call the member services number on your card and ask about inpatient detox coverage, your remaining deductible, and pre-authorization requirements.

Option 2: Let us do it. Call our admissions team with your Cigna member ID, your group number if your card has one, and the policyholder’s name and date of birth. We contact Cigna, verify your benefits, explain your costs in plain terms, handle pre-authorization, and answer any questions about payment options for your share.
