Starting to use drugs can be easy. Stopping, and asking for medical help, is much harder.
Delray Beach is known for its beaches and its downtown, and it has also spent decades dealing with drug and alcohol use. Out of that history came one of South Florida’s largest recovery communities.
This page explains how dependence develops, the types of rehab programs available to Delray Beach residents, and how Allure Detox in West Palm Beach can help with the first stages of treatment.
Understanding Dependency
Addiction, clinically called substance use disorder, is a medical condition, not a character flaw. Understanding what happens in the brain helps explain why stopping is so difficult.
The Chemistry
Drugs trigger the release of dopamine in the brain, which produces feelings of pleasure and relief. Whether to cope with stress or with a negative self-image, some people come to rely on substances for that effect.
That is where dependency starts. It is not only the substance that pulls people back, though. It is also the anticipation.
Anticipation plays a big role in dependency. Obtaining a drug and preparing to use it also release dopamine, which reinforces the cycle before the drug is even taken.
The Consequences
The brain cannot keep producing dopamine at that level. As substance misuse continues, the person’s baseline mood drops, and they need the substance just to feel normal.
Over time, this can lead to depression and to medical and behavioral problems.
Understanding Rehabilitation
Many people put off treatment because of the stigma attached to it. Trained professionals can make recovery safer and far less difficult than going it alone.
The type of rehab you need depends on the substance, how long you have been using it, and your medical history.
That is why talking with a healthcare professional matters. They take these factors into account before recommending a program.
Types of Rehab Programs
There are several levels of care, and most people move through more than one. Allure Detox provides the first two below at our West Palm Beach facility.
Detoxification Program
Detox is usually the first step. It is the period when the body clears the substance.
In a medical detox, this happens under the supervision of medical staff, who can prescribe medications to ease the sickness and pain of withdrawal and watch for complications.
Inpatient Addiction Treatment Program
In an inpatient addiction treatment program, also called residential treatment, people stay at the treatment center, away from temptations and distractions.
After detox, patients take part in group therapy, individual therapy, and mental health assessment and care.
Patients have 24/7 access to medical supervision from nurses, physicians, and psychiatric providers.
Partial Hospitalization Programs
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides services similar to inpatient treatment but patients go home, or to sober housing, at the end of the day.
For some people PHP is the first step in recovery. For others it is a step down after an inpatient program.
PHP typically involves several hours of treatment a day, most days of the week, including one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and medication management. How long it lasts depends on your needs and progress.
Intensive Outpatient Program
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides counseling and mental health services for people who do not need daily supervision.
It involves fewer hours each week than PHP, usually a few hours a day on several days. Most of the work happens in groups, with some individual therapy.
Outpatient Program
Standard outpatient programs offer counseling and mental health services with the lightest time commitment, so people can continue treatment while keeping up with work and family.
Rehab Options for Delray Beach Residents
Delray Beach has long been known as a recovery hub, with a supportive community, many sober living homes, and frequent 12-step meetings. That makes it a good place to continue recovery once the first stages of treatment are complete.
Detox and Residential Treatment at Allure Detox
Allure Detox is a licensed medical detox and residential treatment center in West Palm Beach, about 20 miles north of Delray Beach on I-95. We are accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Treatment includes medically supervised detox, residential care, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dual diagnosis care for co-occurring mental health conditions, and 12-step programs. Family members can take part in therapy sessions.
Stepping Down Closer to Home
Allure does not run PHP, IOP, or outpatient programs on site. Before you leave, our team arranges the next level of care, often through our sister facilities in the Recreate Behavioral Health Network, which has locations in southern Palm Beach County. That lets Delray Beach residents continue treatment close to home.
Insurance Coverage
Allure Detox works with many major U.S. health insurance plans, so your insurance may cover part or all of a medically supervised detox. We are not able to accept Medicaid or Medicare at this time. See our accepted insurances page for the plans we work with most often.
